DE BORTOLI WINES RUTHERGLEN ESTATE DURIF 2022

DE BORTOLI WINES RUTHERGLEN ESTATE DURIF 2022 ($22 / Rutherglen, VIC)

Anybody who knows me, is well aware that I am a Durif freak. I have adored #Durif since I first tasted the Morris Wines of Rutherglen Durif way back in the late 1980’s when I was working for Orlando Wines, the then owners of Morris. I was smitten by the big, deep, rich, beautifully structured, superb flavours of this big, bold wine, and have remained so.

Over the years I have amassed quite a collection of Durif, mainly from Morris- going back to vintage 1970, but also from other great producers. Since the turn of the century Durif has blossomed forth from Rutherglen so that today there are some outstanding Durif produced in the Riverland Wine, Barossa, Riverina, Heathcote and the Alpine/ King Valley region of Victoria. In the last twelve months, Durif has been the week’s wine review four times, and is again today.

For many years I appreciated the big tasty Durif produced by Rutherglen Estate, which was acquired De Bortoli Wines a few years ago. I am delighted to be able to advise that the 2022 Rutherglen Estate Durif is excellent and even a tad better than I remember it from a few years ago.

So the De Bortoli Wines Rutherglen Estate 2022 Durif is almost black in colour, has a soft brambly red berry bouquet with a hint of chocolate. The palate is very big, superbly rich, with great depth of divine flavours, including a dollop of liquid chocolate and it is perfectly balanced. The finish is still a bit tight and grippy but will evolve with some judicious cellaring and become a truly sublime nectar.

It is TRULY AWESOME!!

P.S. It has a Gold Medal form the 2022 VinAsia awards.

This superb wine along with the rest of the Rutherglen Estate Range (which includes the divine Sparkling Shiraz/Durif) can be found at:
