VARNEY WINES 2023 MENCIA

VARNEY WINES 2023 MENCIA ($36 / McLaren Vale, SA)

This week I am talking about mencia a native Iberian red variety that until the 1990’s planted on fertile alluvial plains so that it usually made pale rather insipid quaffing wine and was hardly known outside of Spain.

Since then it has blossomed in Bierzo where it was planted on the hillsides and produced magnificent, deeply coloured exquisite world class wine. As a result, it is now gradually spreading its wings across the globe. Here in Australia, there are currently 22 producers located mainly in the Riverland, McLaren Vale and the Granite Belt (Queensland). I wrote an article about it in Australia's Wine Business Magazine (WBM) Magnificent Mencia July/August 2017.

This emerging variety has a fantastic future ahead of it, with a number of excellent, world-class wines already being made by talented Aussie winemakers.

Today’s wine is a sensational example of what this exciting variety is capable of delivering here.

It is the superb Varney Wines 2023 Mclaren Vale Mencia (Seaview sub-region). Massively coloured, almost black with a classy rich aromatic bouquet of ripe red berries, with a good dollop of dried herbs, just a hint of earthiness and a smidge of spice- quite complex. The palate is sublime with lashings of big silky smooth flavours leading to a magnificent, long lasting finish. TRULY AWESOME!!!
