SOUMAH 2023 'SINGLE VINEYARD' HEXHAM SYRAH ($42 / Yarra Valley, VIC)
This week I am talking about Shiraz- by another name i.e. Syrah – the French spelling/ pronunciation.
While there appears to be no hard and fast rule, to me the logical way to name the variety is to call the bigger/warmer climate wine SHIRAZ and the cooler climate more elegant style Syrah.
Today’s wine definitely falls into the second category in every respect.
This magnificent, cool climate Syrah is mid-depth purple in colour, has a big bright elegant bouquet of black & red berries, with just a splash of fragrant spices. The palate is delightful, tight yet very tasty with a hint of vanillin oak & a smidge of savouriness, leading to a tight, attractive, lingering finish. This cool climate masterpiece will evolve superbly over the next few years to become TRULY STUNNING!!
