8 Mudgee Wines that shaped the region.
Following is a list of wines that have helped shape the Mudgee Wine Region. These are wines that have had (or are still having) a real impact on how the regional wine styles and varietal selections are developing and evolving.
Craigmoor Chardonnay
If you want an argument in the Hunter Valley, remind them that Mudgee made tghe first wine labelled as Chardonnay. Although historically contentious, it was an important step that helped create the country's reputation asa world-recognised Chardonnay producer. All credit to winemaker Pieter Van Gent.
Montrose Sangiovese
The work of winemaker Carlo Carino was pioneering. While at Montrose he released Australia's first Sangiovese. This paved the way for new varieties in the country. Sangiovese is now one of the most exciting varieties in the country with excellent examples from a range of regions including Angullong (Orange, NSW) and Coriole (McLaren Vale, SA). Mudgee's First Ridge is now carrying the torch for Mudgee's Sangio.
Botobolar Organic Shiraz
As Australia's first certified organic winegrower, Botobolar cemented itself into vinous history. Mudgee was the depository of organic winemaker experience in Australia. The growth of organic winemaking can trace its history back to this foresight and innovation of Gil and Vince Wahlquist.
Rosemount Estate ‘Mountain Blue’ Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon
Rosemount needs no introduction for students of wine. This classy wine was one of the first to be commercially promoted; taking the Mudgee name to a global audience. It is a wine gracing many a cellar. The vineyard is one of the best in Mudgee and is now owned by the Yeates family.
Huntington Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Established in 1969 by Bob and Wendy Roberts, this is a winery that embodies Mudgee. It was calculated leap of faith, when others (such as Len Evans), were planting in the Hunter Valley. Bob was instrumental in creating the Mudgee Appellation, a precursor to wine region geographical indications (GIs) in Australia.
Lowe Family Wines Zinfandel
The tenacious and innovative David Lowe took Mudgee to the world when his 2003 Low Reserve Zinfandel was awarded the 'Best Zinfandel Trophy' at the 2005 International Wine Challenge. Whilst now a mainstream variety, his Zin remains a premier wine of NSW.
Robert Stein Dry Riesling
The Stein family trace their ancestors back to the first Europeans to bring grapevines to Australia. Third Generation Jacob Stein is a master of Riesling. His Rieslings sit as the most awarded wines to come out of the region. The are wines thats others emulate; the most important wines of Mudgee.
Logan 'Ridge of Tears' Shiraz
Peter Logan transformed the Mudgee landscape with the building of his very polished Cellar Door, and smart packaging. He took Mudgee to key markets in Australia and abroad. We've chosen his classy 'Ridge of Tears' Shiraz as a showcase of the future of Shiraz in the region.
